What is the Kedmanee layout?
The Kedmanee layout is the standard Thai keyboard, on computers and phones alike.
Thai has more consonants, vowels and marks than a keyboard has keys, so each key carries two characters, and the second one needs shift. On a computer keyboard, the four keys under your left hand's resting position type these consonants:
The iPhone's Thai keyboard has four rows of letters instead of three, and the shift layer holds the rest. Shift lasts for one key: tap shift, then the key, and the keyboard goes back to the first layer.
In what order do you type Thai?
You type Thai in the order it is written, left to right, so a vowel written before the consonant is typed first.
- A vowel written before the consonant is typed first. For bpai, type the vowel, then the consonant.
- A vowel above or below goes in after its consonant, as in dii, and a tone mark comes after that. For mâi, type the vowel, the consonant, then the tone mark.
- Anything written after the consonant comes last. For kâao, type the consonant, the tone mark, then the vowel and the final consonant.

- ดี
- ไม่
- ข้าว
Thai vowels shows where every vowel is written, which is the order you type it in.
